HDR is a process that involves taking multiple photographs (without moving the camera) at different exposures and then using software (i.e photoshop, photomatix, FDRtools...) to merge the different exposure together to form one image that has a larger than normal range of contrast. Standard computer monitors cannot display the rage of contrast that an HDR image has so a second step is used to make these iamges viewable. This step is tonemapping. Tonemapping is where all the magic happens. Tonemaping is intended to make the photograph appear as the human eye would see it. I however use the tonemapping step to give my photographs the "painted" look you commonly see in an HDR image. If you want to learn more about HDR you can read about it on my information page or check out some of my links. |
